Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman directs first film
If you’re into artier fare than The Hulk, you’ve probably heard of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, the creative mind behind Adaptation, Being John Malkovich, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Kaufman has worked with many a talented director, most notably Spike Jonze and Michael Gondry. Now the writer tries his hand at directing, with Synecdoche, New York premiering at Cannes.
The film still doesn’t have a U.S. distributer, but it certainly features a strong cast. Catherine Keener, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Michelle Williams star in a story that, like Kaufman’s other projects, mixes autobiographical elements with the surreal. No definitive reviews are in, but the movie sounds ambitious and intriguing. Says Variety: “At its core a study of a theater director whose life goes off the rails into uncharted artistic territory, it’s the sort of work that on its face appears overreaching and isn’t entirely digestible on one viewing.” Hmmm, sounds familiar.
