Once upon a time, the cast of MTV’s reality show The Real World included, if not always inspirational young people, at least functional, semi-normal ones. Now, not so much. The show ventured to Hollywood for its twentieth season, with a house full of wannabe actors and musicians. In the nine episodes so far, there’s been one trip to rehab, two mandatory anger management classes, countless tense house meetings and drunken nights, and now, two cast members gone. 

Both Greg and Joey left in the last episode, with Greg getting booted and Joey deciding to focus on his sobriety. Joey left for rehab in episode 5, after drinking himself into a rage that scared even frat boy Dave. He returned in Wednesday’s episode. The roommates rallied around Joey while he was in rehab, but after he’d returned it was partying as usual. All except for Sarah and possibly Will are devoted to getting their drink on, and even at their most supportive they weren’t serious about modifying their lifestyle for Joey’s sake. I can still see Greg’s look of speechless shock when someone suggested they ban booze from the house. 

Bad boy Greg has been the show’s villain from episode one, and I don’t know what the cast is going to do without Greg-bashing to unite them. Not liking Greg was all they had in common! In Wednesday’s episode, he nonchalantly skipped out on their debut improv performance to go to a runway show and network get drunk with models. This was the last straw for their instructor, who said if you’re not showing up to work, you’re out of the house. (Apparently an improv class is considered a job in Hollywood.)

So who’s left in the house? There’s former meth head and stripper Brianna, Will the two-timin’ lady’s man, self-righteous Sarah, frat boy Dave, and Dave’s some time hookup, Kim. Greg and Joey’s replacements are being shipped in for the next episode, but can they possibly bring the drama of their predecessors?
