Will the legal battle over “Project Runway” hurt the upcoming season?

Protective Project Runway fans are in a tizzy about the upcoming changes to the show.  The troubles began when the all-powerful Weinstein Co. announced that in November the show will be switching networks, moving from Bravo to Lifetime. In this deal, Lifetime would air season 6 and the next four cycles. Bravo’s parent company, NBC, responded with a lawsuit claiming the $150 million deal with Lifetime was a breach of contract. The first court date is set for this month.

Soon after, it was discovered that the 6th season would take place partly in L.A. rather than exclusively in NYC, and that production company Magical Elves would not be following the show to Lifetime. Insiders say Magical Elves has been integral to the show’s success. There are rumors that Bravo is in talks with them to create a new fashion reality show. Now Bunim-Murray Productions, formerly of The Real World, is said to be taking the place of Magical Elves.

All these changes have fans worried, and rightly so. The president of Lifetime downplays the changes, while in a recent interview with Forbes magazine, host Heidi Klum admits the show is getting ”a facelift.” She continues, “The look of the show will change a little bit, and maybe we will add some catchphrases that will be a little bit different… We’re moving to Los Angeles, so I think it will have a little bit more of a Hollywood flair.” Dear, beautiful Heidi, I don’t think she knows what she’s saying.

Poor bastard child season 5 is clearly getting lost in the midst of all the speculation. The upcoming season is uncomfortably wedged in between the old and the new Project Runway, and it remains to be seen how all the looming changes will affect the quality. Season 5 premiers on July 16th on Bravo.
