Another designer bites the dust on “Project Runway”

This episode the designers gave makeovers to recent college grads. They worked with the grads and their mothers to create professional looks for new jobs and interviews. There were some interesting pairings of girls and designers. Old-fashioned Joe got trendy graphic design-major Laura, who he dressed in a conservative pin-stripe skirt suit. Kenley, on the other hand, lucked out and got someone with exactly her own tastes. Leanne got a soon-to-be elementary school teacher who looked fourteen. She said she wanted to look like an authority figure while also being comfortable. Leanne made a dress, then had to re-work the top when the girl’s mother exclaimed that it made her look flat-chested.

Jerrell won the challenge with a modern, figure-flattering chocolate brown ensemble, while Joe, Suede and Leanne were on the chopping block. Suede’s outfit was a swirly-patterned dress (”Pucci-esque” he called the pattern) and a jacket with flared sleeves. His fellow-designers knew he was in trouble with that jacket, which along with Joe’s reminded me of 90’s Fashion Bug. Suede’s design frightened the judges so much they didn’t even care to describe it. Usually Michael Kors comes up with scathing witticisms, but he didn’t say a word. Nina Garcia held her tongue too. Her solemn “I will say no more” was the worst possible assessment she could have given.

In the end it was Joe’s turn to go. It was a bit of a non-event, because no one pictured Joe at Bryant Park anyway, not because he isn’t talented but because his designs aren’t current enough. Now Kenley, Suede, Korto, Jerrell, and Leanne remain. Will Kenley throw a tantrum on the runway next episode? Stay tuned…
